Our Mission

Faithful exposition of God’s Word, in the tradition of sovereign grace, from one minister’s desk in Abingdon, Virginia — equipping the saints for worshipful service as far as the Lord is pleased to carry it.

Meet Joel Taylor

Voice in the Valley is the teaching ministry of Joel Taylor, committed to the expositional teaching of the Bible so that believers may be established in the faith, equipped for worshipful service, and local churches strengthened. Joel has been a Baptist minister for over forty years. It is long enough to have watched ministry trends come and go, and long enough to be certain that what the church needs now is what it has always needed: the faithful, unashamed preaching of the Word of God.

Joel Taylor was born in 1961 and raised in the Arkansas delta, the son of a Baptist preacher. Ministry runs deep in his family – his father began preaching at the age of sixteen. Joel followed that calling, beginning to preach in 1980 and being called as a Pastor-Teacher in 1983. He began his ministry alongside his father in southwest Virginia, where he has remained rooted ever since, now making his home in historic Abingdon, Virginia.

Joel’s intellectual formation is as distinctive as his calling. He studied Classical Studies at the University of Arkansas: classical literature, ancient Greek and Latin, Greco-Roman history, philosophy, and art — and has pursued further theological studies at Reformed Theological Seminary. His other educational pursuits include the University of Oxford (UK). He is a lifelong student of the classics, and that depth of learning shapes every sermon and lesson he delivers.

At the heart of Voice in the Valley Ministries is a conviction about what preaching is for. Joel’s task is not to introduce things never before known, but to remind us of what we must never forget — the foundational truths of God’s holy Word, and how Scripture alone brings truly lasting change. In an age that desperately desires transformation yet searches for it in all the wrong places, the authoritative preaching and teaching of God’s Word remains the only answer.

Joel preaches and teaches verse-by-verse through Scripture. He does not merely share studies or offer a few points of application. He seeks to expose the darkness of a Western culture whose mind has been filled with lies and deception, and to meet that darkness with the light of God’s Word. Real change — the kind that endures — comes only by the work of the Holy Spirit through the faithful proclamation of Scripture.

He stands in the Reformed Baptist tradition, holding to the doctrines of grace and subscribing to the 1689 London Baptist Confession. His theological instincts were formed by the men he keeps returning to: Spurgeon, Owen, Calvin, Flavel, Watson, and a host of other divines — preachers and theologians who trusted the Word to do what no technique can manufacture.

He makes his home in Abingdon, Virginia, in the mountains of Southwest Virginia with his wife Jennifer. Abingdon is a town that has known the gospel for a long time, and Joel has his ministry here, the kind of place and the kind of ministry that do not make headlines.

Voice in the Valley Ministries is his newest labor. It is built on a simple conviction: that Ephesians 4:12 means what it says, that the Lord has given pastor-teachers to his church for the equipping of the saints for worshipful service. This ministry exists to do exactly that. It begins here, in Abingdon, and reaches as far as the Lord is pleased to carry it.

Our Convictions

Voice in the Valley Ministries is a Reformed Baptist ministry, holding to the doctrines of grace and subscribing to the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith. If you want to know precisely what we believe and why, the Confession says it better than we can in a paragraph.
